Movie Trailer Conventions.

  • A very common convention of a movie trailer is the use off inter titles, these are used to give the audience knowledge of the movie details like release date or the narrative of the story. This is evident at 01:06 in this trailer, it is used in this trailer to inform the target audience when the film is released. Due to releasing the release date, the media institution most likely chose to have a simultaneous release so the media institutions don't have to create multiple trailers for the same sequence of footage.
  • Another major common convention if the use of the soundtrack, which uses synergy to promote the film product. Furthermore, the use of the soundtrack allows the audience to get interested about both products, also the media institutions can successfully time transitions with the film plot for instance at 1.09 in the trailer, every time a drum beat is heard the movie fades to black and a new different scene is seen as soon as the beat fades.
  • The movie trailer will try and suggest character development which is very common as that is a main cause of why the target audience will go see the movie, it is seen throughout this trailer the main characters like Raven, Hank, Professor X etc are portrayed in certain ways to create a representation of their character.
  • This movie trailer utilises short clips of the final product to produce a full length trailer, this keeps the target audience in suspense as the plot isn't revealed.
  • If it's a franchise then the trailer will feature more uncommon characters as it will hook new fans
  • The movie trailer nearly always uses transitions to make the transition between short clips smoother.
  • On every professional trailer a MPAA audience green/red screen which is evident at the start of the movie trailer.
  • At the end of the trailer the institutional details with logos of the production and distribution companies in this case its Marvel, and Disney Studios.
  • If a movie has a higher age certification or age rating, then it's common to have the age restriction on the trailer to inform the target audience.
  • Normally on most trailers, the actor's names will appear on the trailer to promote the movie. However, in this case do the massive a star cast due to being a blockbuster, the cast list is far too big to list so as a compromise the production company have instead shown the characters so the target audience know they are in the movie.
  • To keep the audience hooked the movie trailer has a wide variety of mise en scene as it is unique to the movie and isn't boring as it isn't repeating the same location/ characters.
  • In this trailer a massive amount of shot types and camera shots are used to create a representation, this is seen with the antagonist in this movie trailer as a low angle shot is seen when the villain is first introduced to the audience to give a sudden portrayal of being powerful this is evident at 00:51. This is further shown at 01:02 because is character has a massive body in comparison to the hero so it gives a positive representation of being strong, which is a common convention that the villain seems stronger than the hero.
  • Due to the genre of this movie being sci fi/ action the production team decided on using non diegetic sounds of the piano tune when is heard at the start of the movie trailer.
  • At 02:08 a turn line is used where the music drops out for a single line of dialogue in this case it's "We'll take everything from them" which is said by a key antagonist. This puts emphasis on the single line which creates suspense for the target audience and it occurs at 00:40 with the same character which is very important as it's key for the story line.
  • From the start of the trailer to 00:58 there is a crescendo of a drum beat which builds the dramatic tension of the movie trailer, this is called the rise. This also uses hits to create the drum beats which are used to create a sense of drama.
  • At 02:28 a button is used by the institution which makes the audience laugh and get more excited as it features a iconic character of the franchise. In this case the button was a joke after the movie title was shown.
  • Due to the movie being a blockbuster the institution wants to give enough information to get the target audience hooked, however doesn't want to give too much away, this is evident in this trailer as the audience are left with so many questions about the movie which makes them go see it. This is called enigma narrative.
